50 journal prompts for students

Grouped by the kind of week you're having rather than by theme, so you can find something usable in about ten seconds. Take one, not the list.

You don't need to answer these in order, and you don't need to answer them well. One honest paragraph is a complete entry.

When everything is too much

For weeks that arrive all at once.

  • What is taking up the most room in my head right now?
  • Which of these things is actually mine to carry this week?
  • What's the smallest first move on the loudest one?
  • What am I afraid will happen if I slow down?
  • What would I take off the list if nobody would notice?
  • Where am I doing more than the situation asks for?
  • What does 'enough for today' look like, honestly?

When you're comparing yourself to everyone

Comparison thrives on incomplete information.

  • Whose progress am I measuring myself against, and what don't I know about their week?
  • What standard am I holding myself to, and where did it come from?
  • What have I done this term that past me would be surprised by?
  • If a friend described my semester back to me, what would I hear?
  • What am I good at that doesn't show up on a transcript?
  • What would I attempt if I weren't worried about looking like a beginner?

When motivation is gone

Usually a fuel problem, not a character problem.

  • What have I been running on this week?
  • When did this last feel interesting, and what was different then?
  • What am I avoiding, and what's the two-minute version of it?
  • Am I tired, unclear, or afraid of doing it badly?
  • What would make starting five percent easier?
  • What have I been telling myself about being 'behind'?
  • What's one thing I could finish today that would feel like contact, not completion?

When you feel alone here

Loneliness at college is extremely common and rarely spoken about.

  • Who could I text without it being a whole thing?
  • What do I miss, specifically — and is a small version of it available here?
  • When did I last feel like myself around other people?
  • What makes reaching out feel risky right now?
  • Where have I felt even slightly at home on campus?
  • What kind of company would actually help tonight — talking, or just not being alone?

When your confidence is low

Evidence works better than affirmations you don't believe yet.

  • What did I handle recently, even imperfectly?
  • What does the way I handled it show about me?
  • What would I say to a friend in exactly my position?
  • Which of my inner critic's lines am I treating as fact?
  • What's something I can do now that I couldn't a year ago?
  • Where was I brave in a way nobody saw?
  • What do I want to be true of how I treat myself this month?

When you can't sleep

Give the day an ending so your mind stops finishing it.

  • What am I still carrying that doesn't have to come to bed with me?
  • What conversation am I replaying, and what do I wish I'd said?
  • What can wait until morning, explicitly?
  • What is my body telling me right now?
  • What would help me settle by even five percent?
  • What went better today than I expected?

When you want to notice the good

Specific and true beats forced positivity.

  • What small thing today would I be glad to remember in a year?
  • Who made this week easier, and do they know?
  • What did I enjoy that had nothing to do with achieving anything?
  • Where did something go quietly right?
  • What am I looking forward to, even slightly?
  • What's one thing about this stage of life I might miss later?
  • What did I do today that was kind, to anyone including me?

Getting more out of a prompt

  • Answer the first version that comes, then ask "and what else?" once.
  • Write toward the feeling, not the summary. "I'm annoyed and I don't know why" is a start.
  • Stop while there's still something left. Journaling doesn't have to be complete.
